Italy's Cardinals at the Vatican Conclave 2025: Who Are They?

As the Church prepares for Conclave 2025, all eyes are on the 17 Italian cardinal electors — the largest national group entering the Sistine Chapel to choose the next Successor of St. Peter.

Although their numbers have declined since the 2013 conclave, the influence of Italian cardinals remains deeply rooted in the Vatican hierarchy and global Church governance. Appointed largely by Pope Francis, many of these electors hold key curial positions, from Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State and leading papabile, to Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, President of the Italian Bishops' Conference and papal envoy for peace in Ukraine.
