In the earlier autograph version, this triple fugue comes directly after the other triple fugue, Contrapunctus VIII, above. The direct link between VIII and XI is less dramatic in the final form. The main subject and the two other subjects from Contrapunctus VIII are treated in their inverted forms, in what is the largest and most daring fugue of the entire work.
