DJJohnny has been out and about in Warrington again, this time exploring “The Old Quay Canal”, or “The Runcorn to Latchford Canal”, or even “The Black Bear Canal”! Built in 1804 by the Mersey and Irwell Navigation Company, in direct competition with the Bridgewater Canal Company - enabling an alternative goods route from Liverpool to Manchester - before the opening of The Manchester Ship Canal - which largely followed the same route as The Old Quay Canal up to 20 Steps Lock at Stockton Heath - where it peeled away, as The Black Bear Canal, back towards the Mersey and the old Manor Lock at Latchford, which was the only leg of the Old Quay Canal Canal to survive after the Manchester Ship Canal was built! This final leg closing in the 1960’s! DJJohnny takes us on an historical journey from the source of water for the Old Quay Canal, all the way to Runcorn, looking at some of the beautiful walks, parks and nature reserves en route! I would like to thank Warrington Library and Museum staff - at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery, as well as Warrington local history Facebook groups - for their help and support and for additional pictures used in this video! And finally, to my friend Ian Rigby, who has been a constant companion and researcher, as we explore history together! All very much appreciated! This is DJJohnny at JDMFM!
