Iowa weather LIVE: Bone chilling cold moves in tonight

We are stating off this morning warmer than the way we will finish the day. Temperatures are in the upper 20s and low 30s to start, but a cold front will pass over late morning into the afternoon which will cause temperatures to drop instead of climb. Teens with wind chills in the single digits will be expected by 5pm as we continue to drop. It will be a very cold night with subzero temperatures over the state by Thursday morning.

Tomorrow morning is expected to be record breaking cold for the 4th of December over a large portion of the state of Iowa. Some areas expected to hit double digits below zero. Winds will be calm, but even a 5 mph wind could generate wind chills in the -20 to -25 range which starts to bring in the frostbite potential. -20 to -30 wind chill values can cause initial frostbite in around 30 minutes, so make sure you and the kids bundle up before heading out. There will not be much of a temperature climb with wind chills near 0 at the warmest for the afternoon.

We will warm up into near 30 for high Friday with our next system approaching for the weekend. A clipper system is moving over the Midwest late Saturday into Sunday. The path is still uncertain with large model disagreement. This does have the potential to lay down impactful snow for travelers, but the track is not determined as of yet. More accurate model data will be available over the next couple of days.
