2023 Christmas Schedule Explained

Since Christmas Day falls on a Monday, there's a question about whether going to church on Christmas Eve can count for both Sunday and Christmas Day. The U.S. Catholic bishops say that to meet both obligations, people should go to two separate Masses—one on Sunday (or Saturday evening after 4 p.m.), and another on Christmas Day (or Monday evening after 4 p.m.).

So, in a nutshell, for Christmas this year, it's a good idea to go to Mass on both Sunday (or Saturday evening) and on Christmas Day (or Monday evening) to celebrate the season fully. To fulfill both your Sunday and Christmas Day Mass obligations in 2023:

Sunday Obligation (Fourth Sunday of Advent):

Attend Mass on Sunday, December 24, or any time after 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 23.
Christmas Day Obligation:

Attend Mass on Monday, December 25, or any time after 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 24.
Ensure you attend two separate Masses to fulfill both obligations.
