June thirteenth, nineteen forty-four. Dymchurch, Kent, England. Four oh seven in the morning. The pre-dawn darkness along the English Channel coast shattered with a sound no one had heard before. A mechanical roar, distinctly unnatural, growing louder by the second. Royal Observer Corps spotters scrambled to their posts, scanning the sky with binoculars and searchlights.
What they saw defied comprehension. A small aircraft, perhaps twenty-five feet long, trailing fire from its tail, hurtling across the Channel at over four hundred miles per hour. No pilot. No cockpit. Just a flying bomb with one ton of high explosive in its nose, heading straight for London.
The German V-1 revenge weapon had arrived. Within hours, hundreds more would follow. Britain's anti-aircraft defenses, which had mastered the art of shooting down manned bombers, suddenly faced an enemy that flew faster, smaller, and lower than anything they had encountered. Traditional contact fuses required a direct hit on a target moving at nearly two hundred meters per second. The mathematics were brutal. Even the best anti-aircraft gunners were achieving hit rates below five percent.
