Through the Great Spaces in the Sky: Fanfare for the F4 Phantom Is dedicated to the memory of Col. William B. Poor, United States Air Force, Retired, who was a pilot for most of his Air Force career. The work is subtitled, Fanfare to the F4 Phantom, and was inspired by the composer’s vivid memories of watching the F4 fly while growing up on Air Force bases. The opening and closing of the work utilize four different triads constituting all twelve pitches. This growing dissonant polychord is meant to depict the ever-present roar of the engines taking off and landing. The bold fanfare, which opens the work, is contrasted against two lyrical sections based on the Air Force hymn, Lord, Guard, and Guide. First presented by the timpani, a motor rhythm is utilized throughout the work in various voices to provide the necessary forward motion for depicting flight. The piece was composed for the South Forsyth Middle School Symphonic Band and will be premiered at the Music for All National Middle School Band Festival on March 13, 2020.
This is a recording generated from the sound files in Finale and Garritan.
