The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has raised concerns about the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Pilatus PC-7 Mk-II trainer aircraft, crucial for ‘Stage-1’ pilot training since 2013. An audit from 2016 to 2021 revealed engine oil leaks in 25% of the fleet (16 out of 64 aircraft), with 38 instances reported.
Despite ongoing discussions with the Swiss manufacturer, Pilatus Aircraft Ltd., the issue remains unresolved as of August 2023. These malfunctions risk disrupting pilot training and question the long-term reliability of these imported aircraft, which were introduced to replace the grounded HPT-32.
The situation highlights the IAF’s challenges in maintaining its training fleet and the broader reliance on foreign suppliers for parts and maintenance.
