A NOTE ABOUT FALSE FOLDS
The "air leak" quality has nothing to do with false folds. Actual false fold constriction sounds more like a buzzy overtone. This exercise might help for FVF simply because it relaxes the true folds as well and so coincidentally might reduce compensation from FVF, but the content of the video is inaccurate.
WARNING: It is very important that we stay relaxed in this exercise! There is tentative evidence to suggest that with the wrong coordination, training silent breathing might encourage muscle tension dysphonia by activating the PCA (posterior cricoarytenoid) in some circumstances. If we stay relaxed, this exercise is safe, since the PCA muscles if activated will deactivate on phonation.
In this video I'll go over how to reduce false vocal fold constriction using silent breathing and sighs.
Quiet Breathing for FVF reduction:
1. Breathe in and out normally
2. Breathe in and out again, but make it silent and airy
this is similar to when blowing out a candle
3. Breathe out again
in the middle of the out breath say "ah"
don't try to change pitch
leave the "ah" as the default position with no effort
this is similar to a sigh
4. Breathe out again
this time change the pitch to the target pitch
