2021 was the 80th anniversary of the first administration of penicillin to a patient: Constable Albert Alexander in the UK in Febuary 1941. However, in the treatment’s infancy, there were inadequate supplies. After recovering enough to sit up in bed and drink cups of tea, Constable Alexander's condition worsened and he died in March 1941.
Dr Ashley J Stevens and Professor Michael Barret tell the remarkable history of the discovery of penicillin, its first use in a patient, and its legacy.
They discuss the four key figures, Sir Alexander Fleming, Lord Howey Florey, Ernst Chain and Norman Heatley.
Constable Alexander's daughter, Sheila, was in the audience as Guest of Honour of this session.
