Amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, a sudden development has sent ripples across the international stage. Reports suggest that within a span of just 56 hours, nearly 16 Chinese military cargo aircraft landed in Iran. The timing of these arrivals—particularly involving China’s strategic Y-20 transport aircraft—and allegations that their transponders were switched off as they approached Iranian airspace have raised serious questions among defence analysts. The central question remains: did China quietly deliver a large consignment of military equipment to Iran?

Beijing has officially denied these claims, and so far no credible satellite imagery or government-confirmed evidence has emerged to substantiate them. Analysts also point out that China has deep economic and strategic interests in Iran. It is one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil. Beyond Iran, Beijing has invested heavily in oil and energy infrastructure across the Middle East, while actively pushing to conduct energy trade in yuan rather than the US dollar.

Against this backdrop, the uncertainty persists. If such an airlift did in fact take place, was it an effort to bolster Iran’s defensive capabilities—or a carefully calibrated political signal aimed at safeguarding China’s position in the global oil market?
