Skimmer shovels were primarily used for grading subroadbed in preparation for paving. They could make a level cut, unlike a conventional steam shovel. They were replaced in this job by more versatile front end loaders.
The Keystone Skimmer uses Planetary Clutches like those in an Automatic Transmission for hoist and crowd. Thus there are no throwout bearings to maintain.
Starboard side of the draw works is Hoist, Port side is Crowd/Dig.
The Sun Gear is the Input, the Planet Gear Spiders are mounted to the cable drums to drive them. The Ring gear normally spins freely. The outboard Brake Band stops the Ring Gear to hoist or dig. The inboard Brake Band stops the drum to hold the load.
The rocker pedal controls swing, via the small clutches above the draw works.
