Four college friends got together for the first time in a while and went hiking for the first time on Mt. Kongō in Chihayaakasaka, Osaka.
Since it was my very first mountain hike, I had no idea what to prepare. Luckily, I’d done a bit of trail running before, so I just packed whatever I had—trail running shoes, a small backpack, a water bottle, and other bits of gear—into my bag.
My friends, on the other hand, have climbed mountains many times. I was constantly amazed as they effortlessly walked up paths that seemed… well, not really like paths at all.
In trail running, you usually stick to runnable paths, but my friends seemed to intentionally choose routes where I’d be asking myself, “Wait, where am I even supposed to put my foot?”—all to make sure I’d enjoy the challenge of real hiking (haha).
Part of the route followed a stream, so the sound of running water made the air feel cooler and fresher. It was so refreshing to walk in the shade, away from the summer sun.
Since it was my first hike, everything at the summit was a brand-new experience—instant noodles, beer, coffee… all tasted completely different up there. I’m still not sure if I fully understand the hype about “ramen at the summit,” but I can say that spending quality time with my old college friends felt like the real luxury.
I captured a bit of video along the way, accompanied by the peaceful sounds of the mountain.
I think I’ll be challenging myself with another hike again sometime soon.
