Ultimate Tennis Serve Technique Checklist In 5 Easy Steps

A comprehensive checklist of the most important elements of a professional-level tennis serve is presented. Each element is broken down into actionable steps that can be easily implemented to improve serve accuracy, power, and consistency.

Step 1: The Setup
During this stage of the serve, bounce the ball as often as your routine requires. Ensure your arms are relaxed and hanging down while using the continental grip.

Step 2: Ball Toss Control
Make sure your body is still and you toss the ball at the correct "release point". We have a video dedicated to this topic called The Last Ball Toss Lesson You Will Ever Need.

Step 3: Trophy Position Balance
This is the stage of the serve where you want to store weight on your legs and you are balanced. I use a "bow and arrow" analogy to describe what this position will do.

Step 4: Know Your Contact Point
The contact point where you want to meet the ball is inside your shoulder or between the ear and shoulder where your arm is extended up in the air. Use images and videos presented in the video for reference.
Step 5: End Of Serve
At the end of the serve, most recreational players finish across their body. The correct thing to actually do is pronate with your strings facing off to the right side as right hander. After you pronate, your racket will come down to the left side.
