About the piece -
Along with Albéniz’s Iberia and Granados' Goyescas, Sanlúcar de Barrameda is one of the most ambitious and complex works in Spanish piano repertoire, and Turina’s true masterpieces.
Cast in four movements, each inspired by a place or typical scene in Sanlúcar, the sonata was written in spring 1921, by which time Turina was firmly established as a leading figure in the Spanish music world. He dedicated the work to the city of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, and gave the premiere himself at its City Hall on 11 September 1922.
