Bar Crossing Awareness – Vosa VakaViti

River and Harbour Sand Bars make up a large proportion of Aotearoa New Zealand’s coastline. Unfortunately, over the last decade, 29 preventable drowning deaths have occurred on these stretches of water. This is a number Coastguard is working hard to reduce in collaboration with Safer Boating.

In this video we share key info and a checklist to tick off before you head out and before you cross a bar to help equip you with the know-how to make the right decision about crossing one of the country’s dangerous bars.

Through the creation of this Bar Awareness series, we’re aiming to reduce the risk of boating related drownings by enabling more New Zealanders to make the right decision when considering crossing a bar.
