COMING UP…We’ve done two of these, and you loved them and asked for more. The great IMPROV Moments in music, and the 3rd time might be the best. These are some of the most entertaining stories I’ve come across. Songs that weren't planned or rehearsed, but became pure gold. We’ve got a producer who brought a feast of chicken and ribs into the studio and got Screamin' Jay Hawkins and his band so drunk they blacked out during the session…and forgot they wrote a song. When they got sober, they discovered they’d created a shocking, unhinged masterpiece called I Put a Spell on You. There's also the legend Ella Fitzgerald, who forgot the lyrics to Mack the Knife during a live broadcast in front of thousands... but instead of panicking, she rewrote the song on the spot and walked away with two Grammys. Plus, the UK band Blur improvised a two-minute parody track called Song 2 to mock Cheesy American rock, fully expecting it to be a throwaway cut. But their label loved it, packaged it as a single, and it became their biggest hit. And then the broken string that caused a badass guitar sound that the band Metallica was never able to repeat again.

#classicrock #80smusic #vinylstory #onehitwonder
Hey Music Junkies, it’s time for some Improv Magic. On this episode, we’re counting down 6 more on-the-spot, magical moments that turned potential song disasters into unforgettable classics. From the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. We were doing less, so we can tell more fleshed-out stories. Starting with our #6 pick with the Surfaris with Wipe Out. Formed in 1962, the Surfaris were a group of scrappy teen surfers from Glendora, California. In fact, the average age of the rocker was 15. The original lineup consisted of vocalist and drummer Ron Wilson, guitarists Jim Fuller and Bob Berryhill, and bassist Pat Connolly. They were complete no-names. Just a bunch of Southern Cal kids riding the wave of the surf rock craze that was taking over the West Coast. At the time, instrumental surf music was exploding in pop culture thanks to bands like Dick Dale and the Del-Tones. The Surfaris began playing local parties and school dances, jamming on the sounds that defined their generation.
But these garage rockers had something special brewing... a youthful energy that would soon capture lightning in a bottle with one of the most recognizable drum breaks in rock history. Jump ahead to 1963 in a tiny California studio. The Surfaris had just finished recording "Surfer Joe" and they were feeling pretty good about it. But then their producer hit them with a bomb. They needed a B-side. The kids looked at each other. They had nothing. So they did what desperate musicians do. They just started playing. Drummer Ron Wilson started pounding out this tribal beat he'd picked up in high school marching band. The guitarists jumped in with a twangy riff. And then, out of nowhere, this maniacal voice cackled "Ha ha ha… wipe out!" followed by the sound of a surfboard snapping in two.
Including Wipeout by the Surfaris, Master of Puppets by Metallica, I Put a Spell on you by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Mack the Knife by Ella Fitzgerald, Rescue Me by Fontella Bass, Song 2 by Blur, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding,
