বৌদ্ধ গ্রন্থ অঙ্গুত্তরা নিকায় ও মহাবস্তুতে ষোলোটি মহাজনপদের উল্লেখ পাওয়া যায়। এই ষোলোটি মহাজনপদের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী ছিল মগধ। বর্তমান বিহার রাজ্যের পাটনা ও গয়া জেলা নিয়ে গঠিত এই মহাজনপদেই গৌতম বুদ্ধ জ্ঞান লাভ করেন। কথিত আছে, উনত্রিশ বছর বয়সে রাজকুমার সিদ্ধার্থ একদিন রাজপ্রাসাদের বিলাসময় জীবন ছেড়ে বাইরের জগতে পা রাখেন। চার দফা ভ্রমণের সময় তিনি এক বৃদ্ধ, এক অসুস্থ, এক মৃত ব্যক্তি ও এক সন্ন্যাসীর দেখা পান। তিনি উপলব্ধি করেন, এই জগতে দুঃখ অনিবার্য, তবে তার নিরসন কি সম্ভব নয়? এর উত্তর খুঁজতে তিনি রাজপ্রাসাদের সকল বৈভব ও স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য ছেড়ে এক সন্ধ্যায় নির্জনে পাড়ি জমান এক অনিশ্চিত গন্তব্যের দিকে। তিনি বুদ্ধগয়ার নিকটবর্তী উরুবিল্ব গ্রামে গিয়ে কঠোর সাধনায় মনোনিবেশ করেন। দীর্ঘ উনপঞ্চাশ দিন কঠোর ধ্যানের পর এক শুভ প্রভাতে তিনি বোধিপ্রাপ্ত হন—তিনি হয়ে ওঠেন বুদ্ধ, এক জাগ্রত সত্তা।

বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের বিস্তারে মৌর্য সম্রাট অশোকের ভূমিকা ছিল অতুলনীয়। কলিঙ্গ যুদ্ধের ভয়াবহতা তাঁকে গভীরভাবে আলোড়িত করেছিল, যার পরিণতিতে তিনি বৌদ্ধ ধর্ম গ্রহণ করেন এবং পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন প্রান্তে শান্তির বার্তা ছড়িয়ে দেন। বুদ্ধের জ্ঞানলাভের প্রায় আড়াইশো বছর পর, তাঁর প্রতি অগাধ শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়ে সম্রাট অশোক মহাবোধি মন্দির নির্মাণ করেন। মহাবোধি মন্দির শুধু এক স্থাপত্যিক নিদর্শন নয়, বরং এটি বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের জীবন্ত প্রতীক। আজকের ভিডিওতে থাকছে বুদ্ধ গয়ার সম্পূর্ণ ইতিহাস।

The Buddhist texts Anguttara Nikaya and Mahavastu mention sixteen Mahajanapadas. The most powerful of these sixteen Mahajanapadas was Magadha. It was in this Mahajanapada, which consists of the present-day Patna and Gaya districts of Bihar, that Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. It is said that at the age of thirty-nine, Prince Siddhartha one day left the luxurious life of the royal palace and set foot in the outside world. During his four journeys, he met an old man, a sick person, a dead person, and a monk. He realized that suffering is inevitable in this world, but is it not possible to eliminate it? In search of the answer, he left all the pomp and comfort of the royal palace and set off in solitude one evening towards an uncertain destination. He went to the village of Urubilva near Bodh Gaya and concentrated on severe meditation. After fifty-nine long days of severe meditation, he attained enlightenment one fine morning—he became the Buddha, an awakened being.

The role of the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka in the spread of Buddhism was unparalleled. The horrors of the Kalinga War deeply moved him, as a result of which he embraced Buddhism and spread the message of peace to different parts of the world. Almost two and a half centuries after the enlightenment of the Buddha, Emperor Ashoka built the Mahabodhi Temple out of deep respect for him. The Mahabodhi Temple is not just an architectural monument, but it is a living symbol of Buddhism. Today's video contains the complete history of Buddha Gaya.
