The late afternoon light over the Bavarian countryside carried the thin, metallic smell of approaching winter, the sort of air that stung the inside of the nostrils and made every breath feel rationed. A train clattered northward across the fields, its olive-green cars filled with the last engineers of a dying Reich. Among them sat Oberingenieur Karl-Heinz Mahr, his gloved hands folded on a canvas satchel he had carried since the first year of the war. Inside were drawings, tools, and slide-rule tables that had once been guarded with a degree of secrecy approaching superstition. Now they were being transported under American authority, sealed not by German military police but by a sergeant from the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
