Why do I love lunch boxes? Partly because there's a limited number of these highly collectable vintage items. Partly because they were one-of-a-kind Pop Art masterpieces, that were mass produced for and used solely by children. Mostly because they're a charming reminder of yesteryear, when a child simply by picking out a lunch box, would choose the attitude they wanted to reveal to the world.
Years before punk-loving teenagers wore Misfits t-shirts, they probably lugged their lunch to school in a Munsters or Addams Family lunch box. Years before music nerds were old enough to get in to an actual music concert, those children could still eat lunch every day with their favorite band members on their KISS, Beatles or Monkees lunch boxes.
From the time the first metal lunch box was created (Hopalong Cassidy in 1950) to the final metal lunch box produced (Rambo 1985), children everywhere cherished them.
If you didn't grow up in the age of vintage metal lunch boxes, I totally get that you might be mystified by their appeal. But for those of us who lived through their heyday, they're forever locked in our hearts.
What lunch box did you take to school...? Feel free to leave a comment!
****************A note on cleaning your vintage metal lunch boxes******************
Don't overthink it. Water and soap. Hold one side of the lunchbox under warm water while gently rubbing it with a cloth with dishwashing soap.
Do the same to all sides, then rinse all the soap off, dry the entire box thoroughly with paper towels, and leave the box open on its side to completely dry in the air.
Avoid harsh cleaners that may damage paint. For an added shine, use a coat of car wax. Seriously. Buff the wax in, same as you would on your car. Then use a microfibre towel to shine. Best of luck!
