In celebration of Judy Garland's 100th birthday, I present you with this very rare audio recording of her signature tune "Over the Rainbow" inducted into the 1981 Grammy Hall of Fame and honored by her former son-in-law and friend, Peter Allen.
This recording comes from The Grammy Hall of Fame TV Special taped at Nederlander Theatre in NYC. Sorry the audio quality goes in and out a bit, but this is probably one of few, if not only, audio recording still in existence of this presentation. I don't even know if the video of this special still exists.
The Grammy Hall of Fame is a recording hall of fame that started in 1974 by the National Academy for Recording Arts and Sciences to honor those recordings made before the inception of the Grammy Awards in 1958. One of the songs inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1981 was Harold Arlen's and Yip Harburg's much-beloved masterpiece, "Over the Rainbow", which is forever immortalized by the great Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz (1939).
Andy Williams introduces "Over the Rainbow" along with Peter Allen's special tribute to his former mother-in-law and friend, Judy Garland with his song, "Quiet Please, There's A Lady On Stage". I wish Judy lived long enough to have sang this song. She would have blown everyone away with this number!
Special thanks to Phil G. for providing this remarkable audio! He preserves and archives the sound of lost and unobtainable original TV dating from 1946-1982. Check out his website, Archival Television Audio, Inc. at: https://www.atvaudio.com/.
