Cat Cat Village - the old village of ethnic groups - attracts tourists from all over the world for its distinctive customs and practices which have been lost in almost ethnic villages. The village is within easy walking distance from any hotel in downtown Sapa.
Cat Cat cultural village was formed in 19th century by the gathering of some families belonging to some ethnic groups living in mountainous areas of northern Vietnam, especially Black H’Mong. They lived next to each other along the mountain side and cultivated surrounding their home. Rice and corn were grown in terraced fields, while traditional handicrafts such as twisting flax and weaving fabric have been well-kept. Through times, Cat Cat Village has transferred to one appealing feature of Sapa’s tourism.
Sa Pa or Sapa, is a frontier township and capital of Sa Pa District in Lào Cai Province in north-west Vietnam. It is one of the main market towns in the area, where several ethnic minority groups such as Hmong, Dao (Yao), Giáy, Pho Lu, and Tay live.
It was first inhabited by people about whom nothing is known. They left in the entire valley hundreds of petroglyphs, mostly composed of lines, which experts think date from the 15th century and represent local cadastres. Then came the highland minorities of the Hmong and Yao. The township is one of the main market ones in the area, where several ethnic minority groups such as Hmong, Dao (Yao), Giáy, Pho Lu, and Tày live. These are the four main minority groups still present in Sa Pa district today. The Kinh (lowland Vietnamese) never originally colonised this highest of Việt Nam’s valleys, which lies in the shadow of Phan-Xi-Pǎng (Fansipan, 3143 m), the highest peak in the country. Sa Pa is also home to more than 200 pieces of boulders with ancient engravings. The "Area of Old Carved Stone in Sapa" has been in the UNESCO tentative list since 1997.
Cat Cat village is named after its splendid waterfall located right at the entrance. This waterfall is originated from the Fansipan mountain, through the forest, delivering water directly to the rice paddy terrace fields, becoming the water source of the village. The stream then joining the Red River to flow down south.
It’s best to visit Cat Cat village during the dry season, ‘cause when the rainy season starts, the weather wouldn’t be in favor of anyone. It can get crazily heavily rain for days, then the road starts to get muddy and slippery. The dry season falls in between the month of September and November, or anytime between March to May.
The road to Cat Cat is quite beautiful, you will go through the winding curves of the road, the two sides are terraced rice fields and houses. When walking down to Cat Cat, cross the sloping concrete slabs to the stone steps.
Villagers still keep the typical culture with traditional Hmong costumes. Women still use cloth wrapped around the head to make towels, coats with embroidered neck collar. Belts are embroidered with fancy motifs with two heads. The skirt has a conical shape that is folded with a firm but firmly creased skirt. Men who still wear a hat made of linen, a shirt in the underarms, a long jacket on the outside. The villagers kept the tradition of dragging their wives. If you fell in love with a girl, they would make friends by "pulling" the girl home and keep her for three days. Then she agrees to be his wife, they will have a wedding or they will be friends again. If you travel to the beginning of the year, you will be able to attend the Festival of Gourds organized to pray for or bless the people. In addition, tourists also enjoy watching the typical dances of the Mong people, Mong flute, tongue, and singing.
