Let's revisit a tiny little annual that produces a flower that resembles the bloodshot eyeball of a crackhead, manic teenager strung out on PCP, or perhaps the character Rat Fink. Sure, this plant is visually stunning and odd as hell but more notable is the extremely specific kind of habitat and ecology that this plant needs to survive - Diplacus Pictus, the Calico Monkey Flower, only grows in the 3' wide margin of bare soil created by kangaroo rats browsing and "scurrying" around the thickets of Ribes quercetorum growing around outcrops of granitic boulders in the foothills of California's Southern Sierra Nevada foothills.
