Wood fossil park of Amkhoi village in Bolpur, Illambajar is a very exceptional State Govt. initiative to pave an experience to see the billion years old Wood fossils created from the pre-historic trees. Also it gives a fabulous opportunity to interact with Mr. Ramprasad Bauri, a locale and the Caretaker of the park. who sleeps, thinks and lives with nature.
প্রায় বছর দশেক আগে এই জঙ্গলে পুকুর কাটতে গিয়ে খোঁজ মেলে বিশাল এক 'রত্ন ভাণ্ডার'-এর। ২৮টি আদিবাসী পরিবারের বসতি থাকা আমখই এলাকায় অদ্ভূত কিছু ফসিলের হদিস পান স্থানীয় আদিবাসীরা। পুকুর কাটার সময় বের হতে থাকে বিশাল বিশাল আকারের সব ফসিল বা জীবাশ্ম। যা নিয়ে রীতিমতো আলোড়ন পড়ে যায় ভূবিজ্ঞানীদের মধ্যে। খবর যায় বন দপ্তরে। তারপর ওই এলাকায় চলে খনন কাজ। উত্তোলিত জীবাশ্ম পাঠানো হয় লখনউ বীরবল সাহানী ইনস্টিটিউটে। এই ধরণের এমন বড় আকৃতির শতাধিক ফসিলের সন্ধান পাওয়ার ঘটনা শুধুমাত্র বাংলায় নয় ভারতেও ছিল এই প্রথম বলে অনেকে দাবি করেন। তাই শুধু খনন কাজই নয়, এই সমস্ত ফসিলগুলোকে নিয়ে একটি উদ্যান গড়ে তোলার পরিকল্পনা ও বীরভূমের অন্যতম পর্যটনের জায়গা হিসেবে তুলে ধরতে উদ্যোগী হয় বন দফতর। এরপর ২০১৫ সালের ২০ জুন আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাবে এই ফসিল পার্কের উদ্বোধন হয়। জানা যায় এখানকার এই জীবাশ্মগুলি প্রায় দেড় কোটি বছর পুরোনো। এগুলি অন্তত পক্ষে মায়োসিন যুগের সাক্ষ্য বহন করে চলেছে বলে জানা যায়।
