7-Days Alone in the Remote Yukon Wilderness

I charter a floatplane out of Whitehorse, Yukon, and get dropped on a remote mountain lake with nothing but a canoe, some food, and camping gear for a seven-day solo trip. My plan is to paddle and portage the wild Wolf River, and I’m immediately into world-class fly fishing for Arctic grayling and trying my hand at catching the giant lake trout that haunt the headwater lake. I discover a collapsed old cabin filled with relics of the Yukon’s past, then learn quickly that the Wolf River demands full attention as I navigate miles of steady whitewater. Camps range from perfect to barely acceptable, and I soon realize I don’t have enough time, forcing me to push more than 40 km a day. I consider extending the trip with my satellite messenger, but a worsening toothache means I need to get out under my own power. Along the way I call in a wolf, have a moose leap into the river beside my canoe, witness brilliant northern lights, and encounter all kinds of wildlife—while battling strong winds and tricky river hazards.
