This used to be very widely grown, mentioned lovingly in 'Geoffrey Bell's book 'Establishing a Small Fruit Garden' and recommended y Lawrence Hills in 'The Good Fruit Guide as 'The best of the Cox taste-alikes'. It makes a small compact tree which flowers and fruits very reliably. Needs thinning to get a decent fruit size, cooks well but does not froth like Bramley. We once made some excellent apple pies for a harvest supper with frothed Bramley and sliced Sunset, a very successful combination. A good choice for a small garden, and if you must grow an apple tree in a large pot (which I do not recommend) this would be a good choice as it is small and self fertile. Oh, and has lovely blossom and is a good pollinator. It does go soft in storage, which may be an advantage for someone with dentures. I don't mean nasty mushy soft, more melting fondant soft. Some of our older customers loved it for its texture as well as flavour.
