They’re back from the dead! Some of the most iconic car names in history have been resurrected, reimagined, and reborn for a new generation of drivers. From the Toyota Supra to the Honda Integra, Ford Capri, and Land Rover Defender, car manufacturers are digging into their archives and reviving legendary car models that once defined eras of motoring passion.

Why are automakers bringing back these classic car legends, and how do the reimagined versions compare?

Take the Toyota Supra. Once the star of car movies and the darling of the tuning world, the last Supra rolled off the line in 2002. Fans mourned its passing — until 2019, when Toyota partnered with BMW to bring it back. The modern Supra shares DNA with the BMW Z4, sporting a powerful inline-six engine and rear-wheel drive.

Then there’s the Ford Bronco, the rugged off-roader that ended production in 1996. Ford revived it in 2020, giving us removable doors, hardcore 4x4 capability, and styling that pays homage to the original. It’s now a direct rival to the Jeep Wrangler and the Land Rover Defender — another legend brought back to life in 2020 after a short production hiatus.

Honda also brought back the Integra in 2022 after a 16-year absence. Once the hero of 1990s JDM culture, the new Integra now shares its underpinnings with the Honda Civic and packs a punchy 1.5-litre turbo engine. It’s smoother, quicker, and smarter — but has it lost the raw thrill of the original?

Renault joined the revival trend too, resurrecting the Alpine A110 in 2017. The new mid-engined sports car weighs just over a ton and rockets from 0–60 mph in 4.5 seconds, just like the lightweight fun-machine of the 1970s. Renault clearly wanted to keep the heritage alive while upgrading the experience for modern enthusiasts.

And who could forget the Fiat 500? The original ended in 1975, yet Fiat reimagined it in 2007 for city drivers wanting retro charm with modern practicality. Yes, it’s grown in size — but that’s the price of safety tech and comfort. Much like BMW did with the Mini, first reintroduced in 2001, keeping the fun and cheeky personality alive while adding modern luxury.

Moving to performance icons, the Honda NSX deserves a special mention. Dubbed the “reliable Ferrari” of the 1990s, the NSX made a comeback in 2016 as a 573-horsepower hybrid supercar capable of 0–60 in just 3.1 seconds. It captured the heart of the original — precision, balance, and driver focus — but added futuristic hybrid power.

The Ford Puma, once a compact coupe, returned as a practical SUV and quickly became one of the UK’s best-selling cars. Likewise, the Ford Capri, once the “working man’s sports car” of the 1970s, has reappeared as a sleek electric vehicle. Purists debate whether it deserves the name, but Ford clearly knows nostalgia sells.

Even Renault has gone electric with the new Renault 5, a retro-styled EV producing a jaw-dropping 533 horsepower and 4,990 Nm of torque from its hub motors. It hits 0–60 in just 3.5 seconds — numbers that would have blown minds in the 1980s.

And now, in 2025, Honda has brought back the Prelude. This all-new coupe packs a 2.0-litre turbo engine with up to 300 horsepower, sprinting to 60 mph in around 5 seconds. It’s the perfect balance of everyday usability and performance, echoing the personality of the original long-bonnet classic.

The Volkswagen Scirocco also made a comeback in 2006, built on the Golf platform and blending coupe looks with everyday practicality. It even won Top Gear’s Car of the Year in 2008 — proof that old names can thrive in new forms when done right.

So why are carmakers doing this? Simple — nostalgia sells. When people have fond memories of a model, reviving the name saves millions in marketing. The brand loyalty and emotional connection are already there. We’ve all had that one car we wish would return.
