I'll show you how to ACE (plus) the missions in this high flying adventure!
--------------
Beware the clouds - treat them as walls! And watch out for how the lightning can travel through the wispy clouds, too! Also, there's a TON of wind at checkpoints 2-5, I don't recommend running stunts through them! And don't be intimidated by the big spiral at the end, it's relatively simple to navigate! The final drop to the landing strip at the end can be disorienting, too, so keep a good watch on your airspeed and altimeter!
--------------
To get an A+ rating you MUST finish a level under the time limit posed (keep in mind it takes an amount of time to land safely, too!), you MUST not take all too much damage (three slightly clipped [green] sections is a safe limit), and you MUST make around 5,000 in acrobatics points.
That last bit is the hardest part. Here's a crash course (...bad choice of words, methinks) in acrobatics:
Complete a ROLL in as many checkpoints as you can. This will be your bread and butter. You can generally make your quota in this manner, though some levels make this an impossibility.
Complete a ROLL just as you enter a checkpoint, then complete another ROLL immediately after. This will double your bonus if properly executed. (Mind.. I didn't know about this one until after these recordings, so use it to get a leg up on my runs, eh?)
You can also do rolls anywhere you like, but they only net a measly 100 points most times.
Fly low! If you're at speed and low over the ground you'll net a repeated 10 points for low altitude flying. If you want that +10 to speed up significantly, tilt a wing towards the ground! If you tilt completely sideways it picks up even more. If you fly UPSIDE-DOWN it's crazy fast.
As much fun as the above can be, it often doesn't add up fast enough to compensate for the risk. Rolling through checkpoints is generally enough. SOME levels require you to attempt this stunt for points due to lack of checkpoints.
Complete a ROLL with LOW ALTITUDE flying. This'll net you a nice little bonus which is almost enough to match a roll through a ring. Mind... this is WAY more risky. You'll notice that I often execute one of these right at the start 'cause it's easy enough right then and there once you get the hang of it (and you can instantly restart if you foul up). MAKE SURE you are flying at above 130 knots or so, first!
Complete a ROLL through a CHECKPOINT at LOW ALTITUDE. This one will net you a very nice bonus. I think it's just as much as two rolls through a checkpoint, so, you may be better off doing that one instead since it is safer.
There are also loop-de-loops, but they take too much time to execute and aren't high paying enough to bother.
-------
Techniques:
Keep in mind you can TURN even while rolling! This is veeeeerrrrry important! It will allow you to complete rolls in tight spots and maneuver where you need to be heading while scoring! All you have to do is take note of the orientation of your craft and while still holding the direction of the roll, slide the stick over to pull UP if the top of your craft is facing the way you want to go, or pull DOWN if the bottom of the craft is where you're headed. Only do it for a moment because your craft is ROLLING - the direction you'll be pulling towards will change as you turn!
(Also keep in mind that pulling DOWN is "up" on the controller and UP is "down" on the controller by default.)
Remember that pulling up (down on controller) is a LOT more responsive than pulling down. Use this to navigate safely.
Remember that special move from Star fox which has you doing most of a loop-de-loop and then rolling right side up to turn around quickly? You can do that here, too! But it's all manual. Give it a try! (I do it in the first Mission video to get the bridge checkpoint.)
USE AIR BRAKES. Very important! This will be saving your butt all the time. You can use them to try and get checkpoints you would have otherwise missed, to prevent yourself from running into a wall, and many other things! Use these as often as needed! (When you see the camera rush up to the back of my plane I'm braking!)
Staying full throttle while flying is pretty much always recommended, but you may turn it down sometimes if you need to conserve gas and/or are always flying downwards through a cave or something. (using airbrakes to slow is the general recommendation.)
-----------
That's all I can think off the top of my head. There are many planes you can choose from and they all have quite different handling and abilities. I went with the biplane because it is the most awesome. Plane and simple~
Happy Flying!
