Exploring the Old Growth Forest at Congaree National Park

In this video, we visit Congaree National Park located near Columbia, SC. Congaree National Park contains the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States. The expanse of trees growing in its floodplain forest are some of the tallest in the eastern United States. The park features one of the highest temperate deciduous forest canopies remaining in the world. The Congaree River flows through the park. Congaree National Park covers 26,692 acres and about 15,000 acres are considered wilderness areas.

In this adventure, we walk you through some of the extensive boardwalk and nature trails in the park and give you a glimpse of this special place. You will see a tree canopy that is over 120 feet tall with towering cypress, beech, oaks, and other species. The park was founded in 2003 and is also designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, an important bird area and a national natural landmark. Congaree National Park features primitive campsites and offers hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and bird watching.
