In the Torah story of Genesis 22, G-d asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his own son. Abraham immediately listened to G-d, who sent one of his messengers to reveal to Abraham that his request was simply a test. As a result of him passing this test, Abraham and his descendants were blessed with future promises of land and fruitfulness. "Vayya’an" compares the moral and ethical situations of Abraham and the Hebrews to the Jewish people today. The soprano utilizes numerous techniques and registers to speak as different characters, telling the story while accompanied by the rest of the ensemble’s timbrally and mathematically explorative processes.
