Overview

With a 603-hp twin-turbo V-8 engine and an AMG-massaged air suspension, the 2024 GLS63 is a luxury SUV for the power-hungry. Its roaring powertrain propelled it to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds at our test track, and with seating for up to seven passengers, it'll get the school run done nearly as quickly. Straight-line performance is its forte though, as the GLS63's handling—while perfectly acceptable for the performance SUV class—isn't as athletic as the brand's super sedans and sports cars. Its ride is firm, especially on the optional 23-inch wheels, so if you're looking for max comfort, you'll want to look at the Benz-branded GLS instead. Comfort and technology features are nearly identical to that less-aggressive model, and they include a wall of digital displays on the dashboard, contemporary connectivity features, supportive seats, high-end materials, and plenty of style.

What's New for 2024?

The GLS63 gets an updated set of taillights for 2024 plus new 21- 22- and 23-inch wheel designs. New puddle lamps illuminate the ground below when the front doors are opened, and the Benz logo above the grille has been replaced by an AMG-specific one. The GLS63's brake calipers have been painted red this year as well, and a new steering wheel dresses up the cabin. More interior color options have been added and Mercedes has included more standard equipment, including a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, automatic high-beam headlamps, and a performance exhaust system.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Three rows of seating and interior styling that's slightly sportier versus the Benz-branded GLS-class sets the GLS63 apart from two-row SUV powerhouses such as the BMW X5 M and the Audi RS Q8. Like those competitors, the GLS63 is gorgeously appointed inside. Soft leather covers nearly every square inch of the cabin, and those areas that aren't leather-wrapped are treated to genuine wood trim and tastefully applied meal trim; buttons and knobs are rendered in a rich-looking metallic finish. Front-seat occupants can enjoy a massage while blasting down the Interstate, and passenger space is generous in the second row, which can also be equipped with heated seats and power sunshades. The third row of seats is tight for adults but perfectly suitable for children. Cargo space is the same as the standard GLS-class, which in our testing fit four carry-on suitcases behind its third row and 30 in total behind the front seats.

Innenraum, Komfort und Fracht
Drei Sitzreihen und ein im Vergleich zur GLS-Klasse von Benz etwas sportlicheres Innendesign heben den GLS63 von zweireihigen SUV-Kraftpaketen wie dem BMW X5 M und dem Audi RS Q8 ab . Wie seine Konkurrenten ist auch der GLS63 innen hervorragend ausgestattet. Nahezu jeder Quadratzentimeter der Kabine ist mit weichem Leder bedeckt, und die Bereiche, die nicht mit Leder bezogen sind, sind mit Zierelementen aus echtem Holz und geschmackvoll angebrachten Zierelementen versehen. Knöpfe und Knöpfe sind in einem edlen Metallic-Finish gehalten. Die Insassen auf den Vordersitzen können eine Massage genießen, während sie die Interstate hinunterrasen, und in der zweiten Reihe, die auch mit Sitzheizung und elektrischen Sonnenblenden ausgestattet werden kann, ist der Fahrgastraum großzügig. Die dritte Sitzreihe ist für Erwachsene eng, für Kinder aber durchaus geeignet. Der Laderaum entspricht dem der Standard-GLS-Klasse, in die in unseren Tests vier Handgepäckkoffer hinter der dritten Sitzreihe und insgesamt 30 hinter den Vordersitzen passen.

Kraftstoffverbrauch und realer MPG


Die EPA schätzt, dass der Kraftstoffverbrauch des GLS63 düstere 14 mpg in der Stadt und 18 mpg auf der Autobahn beträgt. Auf unserer 200-Meilen-Autobahn-Teststrecke zum Kraftstoffverbrauch lieferte der GLS63 ordentliche 22 mpg.
