I’ve been thinking about recording the entire Tarkus suite for quite some time, but I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea. For many reasons: first of all, it’s practically impossible to replicate exactly what Carl Palmer did in the original version. That would open me up to all kinds of silly critiques like, “Hey, you’re not playing it exactly like him,” or “Meh, the sound’s not the same.” But honestly—these are my renditions, so… who cares?

Another reason is that it’s a 20-minute-long piece, and remembering all the transitions is no small task. If I mess up in the middle of a take, I have to start over from the beginning—because that’s just how I like to do things.

That said, Tarkus was a huge part of my musical education when I was very young. It’s one of those records I’d take with me to a desert island. So I had to pay tribute to this incredible band and the great musicians behind it. Rip Greg, Rip Keith. Long live Carl Palmer.

No editing, no trigger, all done in two takes (all mistakes kept, nothing has been fixed)
