As part of the event organized by the Together for Europe network, a special time of prayer will take place at the Chapel for Europe (Rue Van Maerlant 22-24, 1040 Brussels) to mark 75 years of peace and fraternity in Europe. This prayer moment will include thanksgiving for these decades of peace, as well as intercessions for the future of Europe and the world.
You are warmly invited to join and unite in hope.
75 Years After the Schuman Declaration: A Call to Renew the Spirit of European Unity
On 9 May 1950, the Schuman Declaration laid the foundations of the European unification process. It began with these words:
“World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it.”
Robert Schuman then made a nearly revolutionary proposal: “to place Franco-German coal and steel production under a common High Authority (…) in such a way that any war between France and Germany becomes not only unthinkable but materially impossible.”
Seventy-five years later, we are called to renew this message, to update both its inspiration and its relevance. Another war is raging in Europe, and the continent is once again facing deep divisions.
It is in this context that the Together for Europe network feels called to engage with key figures from the European political scene—people from diverse cultural and political backgrounds. The Christian principles guiding Together for Europe express values that can also be shared by other worldviews and belief systems—starting with the pursuit of the common good and the cultivation of friendship among peoples.
Together, we want to take responsibility for building a value-based European unity and to “give Europe a soul”.
