Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt has hit out at the Northern Territory government over the state of housing in remote communities.
Speaking at a gathering of aboriginal land councils in Darwin, Mr Wyatt threatened to take the provision of housing out of the Territory government’s hands if it doesn’t lift its game.
The NT Labor government promised to spend $1.1 billion on remote housing over 10 years, but in the four years since it was elected it has spent just $200 million - which is the equivalent of 110 new homes.
The federal government has also fallen short of its promised target of $550 million, with only $110 million being spent.
Overcrowding in remote Indigenous housing is getting worse, with 2,515 homes considered overcrowded in the NT.
