Midland on Sampling, Logic Workflow & Finding Honesty in Music | CDR Sessions (London)

Producer and DJ Midland joins CDR Sessions at Corsica Studios for an open and thoughtful conversation about creativity, sound design, and the personal journey behind his acclaimed body of work.

In this talk, Midland reflects on his early beginnings in Leeds, from pirate radio nights and drum & bass sets at SubDub and Exodus, to discovering house and techno and finding his first release with Aus Music. He discusses learning Logic Pro from scratch, overcoming creative barriers, and the long, exploratory process that shaped his 2024 album “Fragments Of Us.”

Midland shares insight into his studio setup and workflow, including how he uses Logic’s Sculpture for physical modelling, Battery for drums, Mini V for pads, and UAD plug-ins like the Studer, Distressor and Ampex for subtle tape saturation and warmth. He breaks down the layered approach to bass processing, his philosophy of “less is more” in arrangement, and why limiting himself to a small palette of sounds often leads to better ideas.

The conversation also touches on mentorship, mental health, and navigating success — from the pressure of following up "Final Credits" to rebuilding a more balanced relationship with touring, creativity and self-care. Midland reflects on how stepping back, doing therapy, and rediscovering curiosity allowed him to reconnect with the joy of making music.
