The unfolding case of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has put him at the centre of an international legal and immigration storm, as he remains in ICE custody in the United States while being sought in Ghana. Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S., Victor Emmanuel Smith, confirms that an extradition request was submitted on December 29, 2025, but attempts to meet Ofori-Atta were declined unless his lawyers were present. ICE has indicated that he was medically cleared before detention, has three of his passports, and may opt for a virtual court process due to FBI concerns about moving him.
The situation appears to go beyond a routine visa matter. U.S. immigration lawyer Jonelle Ocloo points out that FBI involvement suggests deeper legal issues, possibly linked to Ofori-Atta’s immigration status and filings for adjustment of status. With reports of visas being revoked while individuals are already in the U.S., ICE is believed to be handling the case from multiple angles. As fewer than 200 Ghanaians remain in detention across various U.S. states—some for as long as 10 months—the case raises critical questions about extradition, immigration enforcement, and the broader legal implications surrounding Ken Ofori-Atta’s detention.
