Mozambique’s government has committed to the global 30x30 goal to protect 30% of Earth’s marine and terrestrial areas by 2030. To do this, it aims at conserving up to 12% of its biodiversity. Monitoring dugong movement through satellite tags is helping to reach this goal by informing a conservation strategy that helps protect the most ecologically important areas around Bazaruto Archipelago.
For these efforts to be successful in the long-term, conservation efforts through monitoring and research must be balanced with the socio-economic needs of local people. In this way, Bazaruto’s ecosystems can continue to thrive, supporting marine life and providing livelihoods for the people of Mozambique.
