Sheep may safely graze | BWV 208 | J. S. Bach (1685-1750) | Arranged by Dr. Virgil Fox

For the second Sunday in #Advent, I play an excerpt from one of Bach's actually secular cantatas, the Hunting Cantata BWV 208. This cantata was composed in 1713 on the occasion of the 31st birthday of Christian von Sachsen-Weißenfels as a festive table music, which was performed in the evening after an extended hunting event of the prince of Neuenburg Castle, in the Jägerhof in Weißenfels. This cantata's aria "#Schafe können sicher #weiden" ("#Sheep may safely #graze") nevertheless has something advental and Christmas-like about it, and is also frequently played during this time. The organ arrangement performed here was written by Dr. Virgil #Fox.

Sheep may safely graze and pasture
In a watchful Shepherd's sight.
Those who rule with wisdom guiding
Bring to hearts a peace abiding
Bless a land with joy made bright.


Schafe können sicher weiden
Wo ein guter Hirte wacht.
Wo Regenten wohl regieren
Kann man Ruh' und Friede spüren
Und was Länder glücklich macht.
