In Autumn 1971 a South African court sentenced the Dean of Johannesburg, the Rev. Gonville French-Beytagh, to five years jail after convicting him of inciting the violent overthrow of the republic and of distributing funds to the families of convicted African revolutionaries. The Dean pleads not guilty and is on bail pending appeal. This report backgrounds the case and looks at the wider issues of the church's attitude to apartheid and those who oppose it.
