Step aboard one of Europe’s most spectacular alpine railways as we travel from Ventimiglia on the Ligurian coast to Cuneo in northern Italy, along the historic Tenda Railway, also called Ferrovia delle Meraviglie. This fascinating cab ride unfolds across a century-old masterpiece of railway engineering that threads through the rugged Alps and bridges the cultures of Italy and France.

Opened in 1928 after more than 50 years of planning and political negotiation, the route climbs from sea level up through narrow gorges, lush valleys, and steep mountain terrain—culminating in the Colle di Tenda Tunnel, an 8-kilometre marvel piercing the main Alpine ridge. The full line once connected Turin to Nice, with a crucial junction in Breil-sur-Roya, where one branch continues into France and the other leads toward Italy via Tende and Cuneo.

The Ventimiglia–Cuneo section we follow today is the original "main line" (tronco principale), which is still operated by Trenitalia, despite large portions of the route running through French territory. With gradients up to 25‰, a minimum curve radius of 300 meters, and over 58% of the track between Bevera and Robilante running through tunnels, this line is a technical wonder of its time—and a timeless journey through some of the most geologically and historically fascinating terrain in Europe.

Passengers and railfans are treated to sweeping views of deep canyons, Mediterranean vegetation, fortress tunnels from a bygone era, and the dramatic shift in climate and architecture as we ascend from the Italian Riviera to the alpine Piedmont.

This ride is more than a connection—it's a cultural corridor and a symbol of cross-border cooperation, resilience, and heritage. Restored and defended against natural disasters and political threats of closure, the Tenda Railway remains a beloved link between sea and mountains.
