shiv mandir ki kahani kashmiri pandit ki zubani
Shiv Mandir in Kokernag, Anantnag, Kashmir, which is currently undergoing reconstruction (0:04-0:18). This particular temple, known as the Saagam Shiv Mandir, was previously damaged but has since been rebuilt, though the original शिवलिंग (Shivalinga) remains intact (1:11-1:20).
An elder caretaker of the temple explains its history:
The temple is over 100 years old (1:35-1:36).
Three Shivalingas were discovered at the site over a century ago during excavation work (1:41-2:07).
The temple is known for a natural spring (Chashma) whose water remains clear and unaffected even during heavy rains, unlike other water sources in the area (2:15-2:34). Local residents rely on this spring for water (2:37-2:38).
During the migration period and militancy, the temple was demolished by "mischievous elements" who stole materials like the kalash, tin sheets, and wood (2:42-3:04).
Reconstruction efforts began two years ago to preserve the Shivalinga, which was being targeted with stones by some individuals (3:08-3:25).
The caretaker mentions that two other temples, one dedicated to Uma Devi (with a spring called Umakund) (3:28-3:37) and another to Chandi Mata, were also located nearby (3:42-4:02). A Ganesha temple was also burned down during the time of the Babri Masjid incident (4:05-4:15). The Ganesha idol, an expensive marble statue, was also stolen (4:31-4:38). This Ganesha temple's land was later taken over for road widening (4:42-4:51).
The temple committee owns 70 kanal of land, both agricultural and non-agricultural (5:03-5:11), and hopes to fully reconstruct the temple to bring back the "old days of Kashmir before 1990" (5:15-5:24).
