The crypt of the Basilica of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse (southwest France) is a 13th century Gothic crypt built when the burial of Saint-Sernin was moved to ground level. Saint-Sernin of Toulouse is considered 'Apostle to the Gauls', preaching in the 3rd century after the persecutions under Emperor Decius. The two-floor crypt houses relics of the True Cross, the apostles and has one of the largest collection of relics in the world.
Its collection of reliquary and chapels includes:
• Chapel of the relics of St. Simon and St. Jude, two of the apostles who teamed up to evangelize in Persia.
• Chapel of St. James the Great, the first apostle to be martyred.
• Casket of St. Giles, 7th century hermit and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
• Chapel of St. Edmund, 9th century King of East Anglia. According to Anglo-Saxon chronicles, martyred by the Great Heathen Army.
• Chapel of the Holy Thorn, housing a relic of the Crown of Thorns place on the head of Jesus by Roman soldiers.
