The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV embodies a simply adorned, modernist design and houses a spacious interior. A few inches shorter and lower than the gas-powered Volkswagen Tiguan, the ID.4's electric driveline provides acceptable performance and a decent amount of range. A 201-horsepower, single-motor model with rear-wheel drive delivers up to 206 miles of EPA-estimated range; opting for the mid-level 282-horsepower, single-motor rear-drive version with the larger of the two available batteries delivers a far more useable 291 miles per charge. If that's not enough go-power, there's still the 335-hp dual-motor all-wheel-drive ID.4, which also uses the bigger battery to deliver superior performance and 263 miles of range. Despite being one of the older EVs on the market, the ID.4 can handle DC fast charging, though it can't recharge as quickly as new competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It's certainly one of the more affordable electric SUVs, although it's challenged by the all-new Chevrolet Equinox EV in terms of price. As one of our favorites in its segment, the Volkswagen ID.4 has earned a spot on our Editors' Choice list for 2025.

What's New for 2025?

Having received a number of revisions for the 2024 model year, including a significantly revised infotainment system, updated software, and increased performance, the 2025 rendition sees a bunch of minor updates. All ID.4s with the 58.0-kWh battery (the smallest available) now come with a 12.9-inch display with backlit sliders as standard equipment, while S models with the same battery pack now have standard ventilated front-row seats. The S and S Plus models can be optioned with the Black Package, which darkens the mirror caps, door handles, badging, and 20-inch black aluminum wheels. Additionally, S Plus models add an auto-dimming driver's side door mirror.

Although we haven't seen any images of it yet, Volkswagen has confirmed a three-row SUV will soon launch on its electric-vehicle architecture. The family-friendly SUV will be called ID.8 and we expect it to share styling with the slightly smaller ID.6 (shown above) that was unveiled for the Chinese market. The ID.8 will be much larger than the ID.4, putting it into contention with mid-size SUVs. It will have three rows of seats and seating for up to seven riders. Rear-wheel drive will likely be standard, but a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive arrangement will probably be optional. It's currently unclear how big of a battery Volkswagen will offer here, but in China buyers of the smaller ID.6 can choose either a 58.0- or 77.0-kWh pack, with a driving range of up to 365 miles with the larger of the two. Given the popularity of three-row crossovers, VW would be wise to bring the ID.8 to market soon, but we don't expect to see it until the 2026 model year.

What's New for 2026?

The ID.8 is all-new and will be the largest of Volkswagen's ID models when it goes on sale. More information should be available closer to the SUV's on-sale date.
