folklore: The Love Triangle | Outtakes

It’s crazy to think about—but today officially marks ONE YEAR since we released "The Love Triangle" into the world.

When we first set out to make this film, we just hoped it would find its niche—people who love short films, Taylor Swift, and her ambiguous love triangle story from "folklore". But we never imagined it would grow into something so much bigger than a winter break passion project made by a group of teenagers. The messages, comments, discussions, Letterboxd reviews, and the fact that over half a million people have embraced this film mean more than we can put into words.

Ever since I first heard folklore, the story of the love triangle lived in my head. I spent years imagining it—what do the characters look like? Did Betty and James end up together? How do they interact? Nearly three years after the album’s release—and after three years of taking video classes in high school—my amazing, spectacular, talented, gifted co-director-writer-producer-editor-Taylor Swift enthusiast-etc., @filmsbymad, and I had a conversation that led to: Wait… what if we actually made this?

It took months of long nights of writing and revising, endless Zoom calls, and reaching out to old friends (and friends of friends) to see if they’d be willing to spare a full week of their winter break to help us bring it to life. We faced obstacles, learned as we went, and somehow, it all came together. Seeing how this film has resonated with so many of you—how you've debated the love triangle, shared your own interpretations, and even created your own art inspired by it—is the greatest reward we could have asked for.

Thank you Maddie, Sean, Lucas, Madison, Abby, Annalise, Avery, Julio, and everyone who lent a hand in creating this project—one that is still talked about a year later.
