My period hadn't come for two months, so I went to see a gynecologist.
The doctor pushed her glasses up while holding the report I'd just had done. "Your husband? He didn't come?"
I shook my head, a sense of foreboding washing over me. "He's busy with work, he doesn't have time."
The woman doctor in her forties looked at me with a somewhat sympathetic gaze. I was terrified, hoping it wasn't what I feared.
"You're pregnant — let him take good care of you. No matter how busy work gets, your wife is the most important."
Sure enough, I was pregnant! "The fetus is very healthy; just take some folic acid."
I sat dazed on a bench downstairs from the hospital, holding the folic acid the doctor had prescribed.
It was early spring, the sun warming my skin, but I felt icy all over.
Because I don't have a husband, only an ex-boyfriend. And we just broke up last week.
I don't know what to do with this child. I can't bear to have him aborted, so I'll keep him for now. If it doesn't work out, I'll be a single mom — it'll be harder, but I'll manage.
