Patients with retinal degeneration often progress slowly: the retina adapts to photoreceptor loss. Bonezzi et al. show that as rods die in mice lacking rhodopsin, rod bipolar cells reconnect to cones. This process does not occur when either rod responses or rod synapses are disrupted. Thus, reconnection seems to depend on degeneration itself.
