Italian brainrot is a series of surrealist Internet memes that emerged in early 2025, characterized by absurd photos of AI-generated creatures with pseudo-Italian names.[1][2] The phenomenon quickly spread across social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, thanks to its combination of synthesized "Italian" voiceovers, grotesque, funny visuals, and nonsensical narrative.
"Tung tung tung sahur" translates to "The one who knocks three times for sahur." In the context of the viral meme, "sahur" refers to the pre-dawn meal Muslims consume during Ramadan, and "tung tung tung" imitates the sound of drums or a gong used as a wake-up call for sahur in some parts of Indonesia. The meme's lore suggests that if someone is called for sahur three times and doesn't answer, this "creature" will appear.
