Filmed in Jacksonville, Florida, and released May 21, 1909, The Girl Spy is the first of a series of adventures starring Gene Gauntier as Nan, a young Southern woman who surreptitiously works for the Confederate Army. The film is an early example of Kalem's turn to making films from the Southern perspective, something they would lean into in the following years.
