How Did Mississippi Become A State? | Statehood

The state of Mississippi has a long history from Native American settlement to Euro-Americans settling along the coast early in colonial history. Its territory, at one time, encompassed the states of Mississippi and Alabama, but through political maneuverings would be cut down to the modern state. The Mississippi River made it a destination for farmers and planters seeking to improve their status in life and its fertile land made those planters wealthy by growing certain crops. When cotton took off as a cash crop, the statehood of the Mississippi Territory was secured because thousands of people came to the area to make their fortune.
