"अजय चंद्रा (Amitabh Bachchan) एक छोटे बिज़नेसमैन और पार्ट-टाइम सिंगर है। अजय के सपने बड़े हैं लेकिन हकीकत छोटी। एक शादी में उसकी मुलाक़ात अमीर घराने की अरुणा (Moushumi Chatterjee) से होती है और दोनों एक-दूसरे को चाहने लगते हैं। लेकिन अपने ग़रीब हालात छुपाने के लिए अजय अपने दोस्त की शानो-शौकत का नक़ली चेहरा पहन लेता है। और जब सच सामने आता है तो अरुणा के पिता (Satyen Kappu) न सिर्फ़ उसे अरुणा से दूर कर देते हैं बल्कि उसे अदालत के कटघरे में भी खड़ा कर देते हैं जहाँ उस पर घटिया माल बनाने और बेचने का इल्ज़ाम लग जाता है।

क्या अजय अपनी बेगुनाही साबित कर अरुणा का प्यार जीत पाएगा ? या सच और साज़िश की इस जंग में सब कुछ हार जाएगा?
